Deep Down and Deadly Yo-Zuri
Written by Gary (Keen’s Tackle)
Having sold Rapala lures for some 10 years in our store I have personally caught fish with them and thus gained confidence in selling them to our customers. However, this year was our first year to be a major stockist of Yo-Zuri lures. Their name was already known to me beforehand, but i had never used them myself.
In May Malcolm from Walker Masterline, the company responsible for their distribution to the UK, offered myself and Jeff the director a day in August on his fishing boat around St Davids. It fell on Sunday the 9th.
An early start saw us arrive in St Davids at 7 and on the boat at 8. Half hour travelling saw us arrive at Malcolms known mark. I cannot say exactly where as it is a mark that Mal had discovered. All I will say is that we were in broken ground and between 20-30 feet of water.
Mal being an experience skipper first mapped the area again (a lot of rocks and pinnacles) just to jog his memory. While doing so the fish finder was picking up large amount of fish close to the bottom of rock and kelp. Due to the area being so rocky we decided to troll plugs and with the fish being so deep we used the Yo-Zuri Deep Down divers and in a blue colour, which work at 18-20 feet making them ideal.
We were using 6-12lb class rods, Abu Ambassadeurs and 8lb mono, locking the lures off at 100 feet behind the boat. The first thing I noticed as the lure started to work the tip of the rod is how quick the action was, and it was only being trolled at 1 knot. We were into fish immediately, both me and Jeff hooking up with Pollock, nothing big but hard hitters all over kelp beds. As we trolled past the rocks on came the Bass, small at first but then they started to gather size.
The same ensued all day producing a total of 13 bass (6 keepers) and endless amounts of pollock of varying sizes. A brilliant days fishing was then finished with a mackerel bashing session.
The Yo-Zuri lures don’t cater enough for the freshwater Salmon and Sea Trout angler in the same way that Rapala does with its natural Brown Trout, Minnow etc. patterns, but as far as a Sea lure goes they are absolutely deadly and I have seen it first hand.
Just like to say thanks to Malcolm for looking after us all day, refusing to take a penny and even gutting our fish!!!
